Editor's Review:
Although Ancestral Quest does sound like some kind of computer game for teenagers, it is actually a serious piece of genealogy software. We were happy to see that the team at Incline Software have given Ancestral Quest several upgrades since our last review of this product including some neat new features.
Genealogy Software For Mac
The first of these is Ancestral Quest’s free trial which allows you to download a fully functioning yet “basic” version of the full Ancestral Quest software. With free trails becoming the industry standard in this category, we were pleased to see Incline Software getting on board with this as these days no user should be content to just take a seller's word on the quality of their product. This free trial will enable you to get stuck straight into you genealogy research, inputting and indexing what you already have, as well as digging for new clues and sources.
Ancestral Quest is integrated with WorldVitalRecords; a half decent genealogy website which we’ve had the pleasure to have reviewed recently. However, users looking to work with the better genealogy websites such as Ancestry.com will have to purchase the full version of Ancestral Quest. However, the basic version will still give you many options for putting together an extensive family tree.
The only other real difference is in the reporting options available with the full version. Paid users will get a host of new and dynamic ways of presenting their findings, from annotated timelines to color coded fan charts. This said, we weren’t especially impressed by the look of these finished reports; rather clinical and not as accessible as those offered by many of our higher ranked products.
Ancestral Quest also lacks many of the advanced features such as research, sourcing, and tracking assistance which set apart the top genealogy programmes. Nonetheless, Ancestral Quest is extremely resource light and can be run from your USB stick. This is great for those conducting research at public libraries or contacts' homes. However, Mac users beware; Ancestral Quest is only Windows compatible.
Overall, Ancestral Quest is decent piece of lightweight genealogy software. It will allow those without the latest PC to perform high quality genealogy research. While not being as swish as some of its competitors, it’ll do the job.
